As I wrote in the section about
the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life, I donated my
services for the Relay to honor my father's memory.
A month
or two after doing my first Relay, I was at a supermarket with
my wife when she noticed a sign about the Leukemia & Lymphoma
Society's Light The Night event that was going to be held several
months later. She asked me, "Didn't your father die from
Leukemia? Well here's an event for the Leukemia society..."
Just
like my experience contacting the Cancer Society, I called the
Leukemia Society, and in just a couple minutes, I volunteered
to provide the music for the Light The Night event, a few months later.
The
Light The Night events are far less extravagant than the all-night
Cancer Society Relay. Start to finish they are just about four
hours. The walk is about 3 miles around the grounds where the event
takes place.
I provide
the music as people gather waiting for the event to begin and
again waiting for the final walkers to complete their laps before
the closing ceremony. Of course, my sound system is used for the
preliminary speeches as well.
The participants have a great time,
and I have a great time as well. I'm as proud of my participation for the Light The Night
events as I am for Relay For Life.
